This paper investigates the development of a unit of study intended to promote cultural awareness and competence through developing an understanding of self as a cultural being. In particular, the unit investigates issues relating to roles in the workplace environment, where power relationships exist that are based on cultural identities. The paper discusses the development process adopted for the unit, including the formation of a writing team incorporating expertise from various departments of Edith Cowan University including the School of Psychology, Kurongkurl Katitjin and the Resource Development Centre. In addition it reports a case study that sought to identify a design process that incorporates expertise from varied disciplines, promotes collaboration within the writing team and results in the development of a quality learning package.
