Teaching Evaluation
The following are the primary evaluation instruments used at Curtin:
Teaching and learning in units
eVALUate (http://evaluate.curtin.edu.au) is Curtin's online system for gathering and reporting student feedback on their perceptions of the effectiveness of their learning experiences. eVALUate has two survey instruments:
- a unit evaluation survey (which asks students their perceptions of what helps and hinders their achievement of unit learning outcomes), and
- a teaching evaluation survey (which asks students to give feedback to individual teachers on their teaching effectiveness).
The University experience that supports learning
CASS (Curtin Annual Student Satisfaction) Survey is an annual online survey available to all students. It investigates numerous aspects of University life including services and facilities.
Graduate Surveys
Graduates of the University are asked for feedback through the Course Experience Questionnaire (CEQ), or, for postgraduate research students, the Postgraduate Research Experience Questionnaire (PREQ). These surveys are Australia-wide surveys, administered by each tertiary institution to their own graduates, under the national co-ordination of the Graduate Careers Council of Australia.
The Curtin Student Voice - what our students are telling us and what we're doing about it
Through our surveys on teaching and learning, particularly eVALUate, students from across the University are telling us:
- That most units have: clear learning outcomes, engaging learning experiences, helpful learning resources (on the Web and in iLectures) and quality teaching.
- That we need to improve on assessment, workload, feedback and the quality of teaching in some units. These issues will be thoroughly addressed through our Curriculum 2010 project, an intensive review of all courses aimed at making assessment clearer, fairer and linked to learning outcomes; improving feedback; better learning resources and more use of iLectures.

Through Curtin's Annual Student Satisfaction (CASS) survey, students from across the University are telling us
- They are generally satisfied with learning support services and computing facilities
- We need to improve on timetabling, parking, printing costs, personal safety on campus
To address these issues, we are planning
- Increased security and lighting on the Bentley campus
- Improved timetabling so that where possible large units have priority and first year classes are not timetabled in the evenings
- Investigate and make recommendations on printing costs
