1. When can I access my study materials?
All study material for you Unit will be available on FLECS (Flexible Learning Environment for Curtin Students). You will be able to gain access to your study materials a week prior to the start of the semester you are enrolled in. Before each semester, you will also receive the Distance Education introductory booklet Going the Distance: studying externally at Curtin. This booklet further explains how you access the course materials for your units. If you have not received any communication from us at least one week before the study period is due to begin, please contact Distance and Education
2. What study materials might
I receive?
A set of study materials may comprise of the following materials:
- a Unit Outline (or Unit Plan)
- a Study Guide and/or Workbook
- a Reader for the unit which will be accessed online through the Library's eReserve system.
These materials will be available online for you to access. Some units may also include supplementary materials such as:
- CDs
- DVDs
- Audio tapes
- Video tapes (VHS)
- Practical manuals
- Home experiment kits
- Slides or photographs
- Computer disks
Each student will be required to access their Curtin student email address at the start of the semester (this is achieved through Oasis) to receive important information from the Distance Education staff regarding the method of access and any other relevant details concerning the distance education unit.
Supplementary materials provided to you may need to be returned to Distance Education(such as audio tapes or slides). These will be labelled as such and you will receive an email reminder near the end of the study period. Failure to return these materials may result in actions regarding your future enrolment.
If you lose or damage any of these materials you will be charged for any replacement costs applicable.
The University expects that students studying externally will have access to the Internet to download, print or otherwise interact with the unit's study materials. However, if you have difficulty accessing any of the material for your unit due to a verifiable medical condition or disability you should discuss the matter with a Disability Counsellor at Disability Services. If you have other compelling reasons why you are unable to access the University's online services, you may apply for an exemption by applying in writing to the Director, Student Services providing the necessary supporting evidence. Every effort will be made to provide the relevant material in an alternate format should the Disability Counsellor or Director, Student Services support a reasonable request to do so.
3. The Plan or Unit Outline
Upon successfully logging in to your online learning environment, you should first read the Plan or Unit Outline as this document describes the structure and administrative details of the unit you are studying. It will briefly outline the content and unit objectives of the unit, and often presents a table summarising the organisation and timeline of the learning activities, setting out readings and references and relating these to your assignments.
The assignments themselves, with details of associated readings and references, are normally included in the Plan or Unit Outline. The Plan or Unit Outline also contains any applicable assignment presentation instructions and advice on contacting your tutor and the Distance Education office.
4. The Guide
The Guide is arguably the most important document in the package. It is designed to guide and direct your learning throughout the study period, topic by topic. It is usually divided into modules, chapters, sections or weeks. In each of these sections you are usually given the objectives, subject content and activities, and are directed to readings and other resources as appropriate.
The Guide performs many of the tasks of your tutor, however it cannot be a replacement for him/her. It is important to keep in close contact with your tutor who can advise you on how to use your Guide for maximum effect throughout the unit.
5. The Reader
A Reader is a collection of articles, documents and extracts from books relevant to your unit, specifically compiled for distance education students who may find it difficult to access the full range of library resources. Your Reader or list of readings will normally be provided to you online through the Library's eReserve system.
The Reader is not intended to be read in isolation from other material. You may also need to purchase textbooks from the Curtin Bookshop and refer to books, journal articles and electronic scholarly information available from the Curtin Library.
6. How do I purchase my textbooks?
Most units require a textbook as part of the course material package. Your textbook list is available to view via the My Studies tab in OASIS. This textbook list is typically made available in the two or three weeks preceding the start of the study period. You can order your textbooks from the Curtin Bookshop online via this site, in person, by fax, phone or mail order using the textbook order form supplied with your distance education materials.
Some textbooks are also available for purchase from the Secondhand Bookshop run by the Curtin Student Guild. When purchasing texts from the Secondhand Bookshop you should always check the edition number and publication date. If you are considering purchasing an earlier edition of the set textbook, you should confirm with your tutor or unit coordinator that this action will not disadvantage your studies
7. What if I experience problems
obtaining textbooks?
If you are experiencing problems obtaining your textbooks and the study period has begun, you should notify your tutor. Some units will be
almost impossible to complete without the textbook so discussions with your tutor are vital.
8. What if I am unable to print out my study materials?
If you are unable to print your study materials on your own printer, alternative arrangements can be made with a commercial printing service such as Curtin Print and Design.
