1. Your student number
All Curtin students are assigned a student number upon initial enrolment. This student number remains with you permanently, regardless of how many courses or units you subsequently enrol in at Curtin.
You should use your Curtin student number:
2. Student Identification Card
Distance Education students enrolled in an award course are entitled to a Curtin student identifaction card. Students are required to present their student card when sitting examinations or borrowing from the library. Information on obtaining your student card can be found here.
3. OASIS
OASIS (Online Access to Student Information Services) is Curtin's student portal. OASIS is a "one-stop-shop" for delivering eServices to Curtin students and is available 24/7 from anywhere in the world. Once you have logged in to OASIS using your Student ID and password, you will have access to a whole range of different services without the need to log in again to each one. Through OASIS, students have access to their student record (eStudent), the Official Communications Channel (OCC), and a range of other online services including a student email account and learning support systems such as WebCT and Blackboard.
It is a condition of enrolment at Curtin that students activate their OASIS account and access OASIS regularly to receive official communications from the University via the OCC. Should you experience any difficulties accessing OASIS please contact OASIS Support.
Further information about OASIS can be found here.
4. Transferring from on-campus to distance education study
If you study on campus (internally) and would prefer to study by distance education, you can tranfer your enrolment within set deadlines. Equally, you can transfer from distance education to on-campus study. Please note that units are not necessarily available in both modes in any given study period. Check the Distance Education Units Availability list to see when units are available.
To amend your enrolment, you must:
When amending your enrolment it is your responsibility to first obtain the approval of the relevant unit coordinator for the unit you wish to enrol in.
Remember the onus is on you to ensure your enrolment is correct. You should check your enrolment advice carefully on the eStudent site, accessible via OASIS.
The last date for enrolment in a distance education unit is the first Friday of each semester. Enrolments cannot be accepted after that date.
5. Can I enrol in a combination of on-campus and distance units at the same time?
Yes. If a unit is available both internally (on-campus) or externally (by distance education) the choice of mode is yours, provided that you obtain approval from the relevant teaching area.
6. Can I enrol in distance education units if I am not enrolled in a degree course?
Yes. If you do not wish to enrol in a course of study resulting in a degree or diploma but wish to study for general interest only, you can study as a Distance Education Extension Student. Extension study allows you to study the units of your choice without committing yourself to a full course. Please note that if you later decide to study towards a degree, you will not be guaranteed credit for the extension units. Recognition of prior learning and credit for previous study is determined on a case-by-case basis .
If you would like to enrol as an extension student you will need to complete an Extension Study Form and submit it to the relevant Divisional Student Services office.
Extension units may be studied on-campus or in the distance mode.
7. Amending your enrolment
If for any reason you need to change your enrolment you should submit an enrolment amendment form to your Divisional Student Services Office prior to the applicable deadline.
8. Withdrawing
If you are experiencing serious difficulties in handling your study program it would be in your best interests to withdraw from a unit voluntarily by the set deadline. Remember that withdrawal after the census date means that you remain liable for unit fees.
Before you decide to withdraw we strongly recommend you to discuss your options with your tutor. He or she may help solve your problem so that the time already invested in your study is not wasted.
Requests for withdrawal must be submitted on an Enrolment Amendment Form to your Divisional Student Services office.
9. Re-enrolment
To continue studying at Curtin you must re-enrol at the end of each Academic year. You will receive an Official Communication via OASIS from your Divisional Student Services office or Student Central towards the end of semester two each year advising you of the re-enrolment dates, deadlines and procedures. Take care to note the deadline for re-enrolment as late submissions may attract a fee.
Your enrolment will be confirmed by Enrolment Advice which you can view on eStudent (accessed via OASIS). Please check your Enrolment Advice carefully as it is your responsibility to ensure that you are enrolled in the correct units and mode (distance or on-campus). If your enrolment is incorrect you must contact your Divisional Student Services office immediately. Failure to amend an incorrect enrolment prior to the deadline may mean you are unable to study your chosen unit and/or you may be liable for fees for units you did not wish to study.
10. Change of address
If you move during a study period, you must update your record. This can be done online through eStudent or by advising Distance and Open Learning Services or your Divisional Student Services office. It is not enough to simply put your new address on an assignment. It is in your best interest to ensure that your contact details, including phone numbers, remain up to date on Curtin's system at all times.
Please note that for privacy and security reasons, change of address notifications received by email will only be accepted from your Curtin-provided email address (accessed via OASIS).
